Area of research / Subject: Impact of Perioperative Nursing Assessment Round on Pain as a Complication of Elective Surgeries at KWASUTH, Ilorin
Postoperative pain is the pain a patient experiences after a surgical procedure which results from tissue injury caused by the surgery itself, such as incisions, manipulation of organs, and may affect patients postoperatively. The study aim to assess the impact of perioperative nursing assessment round on pain as a complications of elective surgeries at Kwara State University Teaching Hospital, Ilorin with this objective; to assess the level of postoperative pain complication in patients who have undergone elective surgeries in both treatment and control groups. A quasi-experimental design was employed using 92 adult patients scheduled for elective surgeries. Participants were allocated to the control and treatment group (N=46). Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that assessed demographic characteristics, anxiety levels, pain experience, and satisfaction with preoperative education. With the aid of the SPSS verison 27, data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including t-tests, chi-square tests, and correlation, with significance set at p < 0.05. Findings of the study shows that majority of the participants were female (68.5%) and had tertiary education (47.8%). The pain level was highest on Day 1 post-surgery (93.3% moderate to severe pain) and reduced by Day 12–15 (72.8% mild or no pain). However, respondents who received structured preoperative education rated it highly, and chi-square analysis indicated a significant (p < 0.05) trend between high education ratings and reduced pain levels on Day 6–8 and Day 12–15. The study concluded that perioperative nursing assessment rounds effectively reduced postoperative pain (Day 6-8 and 12-15), excluding Day 1, which may be due to other factors not assessed. The results indicated reduction in pain associated in surgical patients indicating a positive impact of perioperative education. Nurses should be adequately trained in patient education and pain assessment with management.
